Versatility is too weak a word to describe Japanese superstar DJ Yousuke Yukimatsu. His handling of genres and tracks would be downright problematic for most other DJs, but Yukimatsu has an almost otherworldly ability to combine tracks from every corner of the world and nail them straight to the dancefloor. His willingness to take risks is unheard of, and through his wild sets, he turns unpredictability itself into the star of the show. What’s the next track going to be? With Yukimatsu, you never know — but no matter what it is, it always fits perfectly, whether it’s an Aerosmith track, a hard-hitting The Prodigy remix, or a quiet, minimalist piano composition.

The die-hard genre-mixer usually starts out wearing a shirt or t-shirt, and as a manifestation of the intensity, he always ends up bare-chested. Despite what is otherwise a well-worn DJ move — throwing off the outer layer — he manages to pull it off without seeming self-staged, and that’s precisely the essence of Yukimatsu. He is humble, even as he puts on a frenzied, high-intensity show with himself and his eclectic musical taste at the center.
Behind Yukimatsu’s career lies a story of defying adversity and changing course in the shadow of a life-altering event. In 2016, he worked as a construction worker while DJing on the side and organizing his Zone Unknown events. But a brain tumor diagnosis and the successful surgery that followed opened up a new perspective on life, and Yukimatsu decided to quit his job and devote himself entirely to his CDJs and every musical genre on the planet. Since then, he has conquered dancefloors and festivals around the world. Most recently, he tore down the Arena stage at Roskilde Festival this summer, and he has, of course, also delivered one of the most legendary Boiler Room sets ever.
